Google+ enables epic "Hangout"

Over the weekend, two epic figures from across the globe were able to hangout via Google+ Hangout. The Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, who have foraged a cross-global friendship, were able to have a video conversation (along with many many others listening in). On one hand this seems like something so simple, a meeting between friends; a social engagement.  On the other hand, this is symbolic on so many levels. The technology that has enabled this is amazing in itself but coupled with the collaborative and inclusive spirit that these two people exemplified in this meeting, it gives hope for great possibilities in the future. Collaboration enabled by technology is opening doors for change- if these two old guys can see the power in that, imagine what else is possible. Steve Jobs 1955-2011

This never-aired commercial that was narrated by Steve Jobs years ago seems like a fitting tribute to the innovator and agent of change.

The Day to disconnect

At Educated Change we teach people how to use all these social media services, tools, smartphones and now I am telling you to disconnect for a day, yes, let it go until you understand the real reasons you are doing this social media and networking stuff.  Learn to disconnect or better yet connect at the right time, doing the right things  is the  reason we started Educated Change.

Facebook just released Timeline, the story of your life or things that you shared.  When you run your timeline years from now, don't look back and say is that all I did was post?  There were a billion people using Facebook yesterday at the same time for an average of 20 min.  Waste of time?

Be smart how you work, play, study, love, hate,  but when you do connect don't fool yourself into thinking everyone else in the room thinks you care about them, they know that when you are answering emails, messages or pokes on your mobile you aren't really present. Your kids know it. Your co-workers know it. Your clients know it. Your spouse knows it. You know it.  Be honest, get some help and be really connected

We can help you understand how, when and where to connect, we support https://www.daytodisconnect.com .

3 Networking ideas

  • Build outward, not inward. Don't waste time deepening connections with people you already know. Get in touch with people in other teams or business units.
  • Go for diversity, not size. Rather than aiming for a massive network, build an efficient one. This requires knowing people who are different from you, and from one another.
  • Go beyond familiar faces. Identify the "hubs" in your company—people who've worked on a variety of teams and projects—and ask them to connect you to others.
